Some speak of “The Royal we,” but if we read the Bible,
God is not a human to be compared with us, and his ways are higher than our ways, Isaiah 55:8-9, and No one can fathom his understanding, Isaiah 40:28,
However, why did he speak in plural when he was talking to himself?
To understand this, we must go back to Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”. in this text, the name of God appears in Hebrew as “Elohim” which literally is translated to “The Gods”, a plural form of God, because the term “El” means God, as in El Shaddai to mean God almighty, like El Shamma

To mean “God is there”, now the suffix “Him” marked plural in Hebrew, So when we have “Elohim” it literally means “God in plural” or “The Gods” already in the first text of the bible we have noticed the only one God who exists in several persons, it is with this nuance that God inspired the author of the book of Genesis to mention the plural pronoun every time God was addressing to himself, but this plurality did not stop only at the book of Genesis, we will see it again in Isaiah 6:8, during the calling of the prophet, God asked himself “…Who will go for us? when he was talking to himself, this is where we have what we call the Trinity, unlike what others think about the Trinity, The Trinity does not mean the existence of 3 Different gods, but the trinity is the fact of having three distinct persons who are all one God, this is how the Lord Jesus said “I and the Father are one”, John 10:30, several texts of the Bible reveal to us the existence of only one God who reveals himself to three distinct persons.
The book of John gives us a remarkable illustration of two distinct people,
John 1:1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. » we see here, the Word and God, by reading we can clearly understand that the apostle John spoke about two distinct persons « the word that was with God » therefore the word, himself and God,
Now the one whom we call “God”, the Word calls him “Father” John 8:54 “Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me.”
So when God said “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness” he was referring to the three persons of the Trinity, (Father, Son and Holy Spirit)
